  • Google Ranks “.tech” New Age gTLDs at #1 on its Search Engine (.tech)

Recently, I came across a .tech website which is a new age generic Top Level Domain (gTLD). The domain was featured above other domains on the topic of “multicropping” for India. This was despite the fact that there were other domains below which had a greater DA.

The screenshot below dismisses a myth where several SEOs and other professionals said that new age generic TLDs like “.tech”, “.online” or “.xyz” domains cannot rank higher on Google.

    What are New Age gTLDs

New Age gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains) are a category of domain name extensions that have been introduced as part of the Internet’s domain name system expansion. This expansion allows for a greater variety of domains beyond the traditional ones like .com, .org, and .net. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what New Age gTLDs are:

    Background

    • Traditional gTLDs: Initially, the Internet had a limited number of gTLDs, including familiar ones like .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, and .mil. These were intended to represent different types of organizations and entities.
    • Expansion of the Domain Name System: To cater to the growing demand for domain names and to allow more flexibility and choice, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) initiated a program to expand the number of gTLDs.

    Characteristics of New Age gTLDs

    • Variety and Specificity: These new gTLDs include a wide range of options, reflecting various industries, interests, communities, and geographic locations, such as .app, .blog, .club, .tech, and .city.
    • Enhanced Branding: Businesses and individuals can use these gTLDs to create more distinctive and memorable online identities, which can be closely aligned with their brand names, sectors, or interests.
    • Innovation: They open up creative possibilities for domain names, allowing for more intuitive and descriptive URLs.

    Impact

    Diversification:

The introduction of new gTLDs has diversified the domain name landscape, offering more choices for domain registration.

Also new age domains help new businesses acquire the domain that belong to their name. For example a business starting a song business can now register a website such as https://songs.tech. This would have been impossible earlier since all single word or keyword domains were already booked.

    SEO and Online Presence:

While traditional gTLDs like .com are deeply ingrained in the public consciousness, new gTLDs offer the potential for innovative branding and may influence future search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.

In my own agency, Ingeniare AI, I use a technique called Keyword Domains. These are the domains which are either partially or fully based on a keyword. For example, I own a domain named https://freemba.in. This is a keyword domain as the term free MBA is a keyword for Google search.

    Challenges:

The proliferation of gTLDs also presents challenges, such as increased potential for cybersquatting and trademark infringement, necessitating vigilant brand protection strategies.

Some SEO tools and Wikipedia flagged these new gTLD as spam or suspicious. However, I estimate that as these domains proliferate the internet, soon these kind of flagging will become lesser.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who can buy .tech domains?

  • Your Meta Descriptions can be Changed By Google

These days meta descriptions rarely matter. Google is going to pick the most relevant paragraph from your website or might even summarize your content to create whole new meta descriptions.

This post is also available on LinkedIn.

The following are the search results for the term “Italian switch words” for which my articles are #ranking on #4 and #5.

Meta Descriptions for 4th and 5th Results of Search Term: Italian Switch Words
Meta Descriptions for 4th and 5th Results of Search Term: Italian Switch Words

The first meta description was mine. But the second was generated by Google itself.

If you take a closer look, you might notice that the second meta description is a list which was not the meta descriptions that I put.

    Why Does This Happen?

Since Google has developed multiple AI algorithms of its own, it is increasingly using them to make the search experience better. This includes generating summary of the website content whenever necessary. The same technology is being used by Amazon to provide a summary of user reviews on its website.

    Is This Harmful For Me?

No, this is not harmful because this will help you rank your article for multiple terms. Google will modify meta descriptions based on suitability with the search term.

Overall, this feature of Google search will only increase your ranking for similar keywords. But, do always remember to write content which are meant to help humans.

Should You Keep Adding Meta Descriptions?

Yes, adding meta descriptions rarely take more than 1 minute if you are an experienced writer like me. This would add to the user experience.

Further, if your meta descriptions are helpful for any search term, it would contribute to your Google rankings.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What should I include in a meta description?

Meta descriptions should seek to answer the search intent as directly as possible.

What is the Standard Meta Description Length?

The width of meta description for a website on Google search is around 900 pixels which is around 150 characters. However, I would suggest you to keep it under 140 because of my experience as an SEO.
  • Google Rolls Out Notes Feature in India

On 07 December 2023, Google rolled out the Notes Feature in India which was recently released in the USA. The two countries are the only areas where the beta version of Notes is available.

The feature lets users add notes to provide feedback on the quality of search engine results page.

  • Google Adds Notes, A New Feature to Improve its Search Engine

A new feature has been added by Google to its search engine which will allow users to leave comments on search results. These comments are meant for Google to better understand user expectations and also address them in an effective manner.

Notes will first be available for users in the USA and India confirmed Cathy Edwards, VP at Google.

The feature seems to be a part of Google’s efforts to create better search results for its users and also aid its previous efforts of Search Generative Experience and adding “experience” to EAT guidelines

    How does Google’s “Notes” work?

The feature allows users to comment on the quality of search results to let it know about what its users actually think about the SERP results.

Notes may also have other forms of input such as images, texts and stickers. Notes created by users will also be visible to others.

These notes could act as an input in machine learning models which can then provide insights and solutions.

Brad Kellet, Senior Director for Engineering at Google Search said that users could also create their own notes to share their expertise with the world.

Google VP Cathy Edwards said in an interview with the Verge that as soon as a user posts a “Note” it will be visible to others within minutes unless its flagged for review. Users would not be able to post notes for offensive queries, the VP added.

Why Google Cares Most About Its Search Engine?

At the end of Q4 in 2022, more than 50% of all sources of Google’s revenue was from its Search Engine. This makes it the most prized asset in Google’s family.

Further, with the rise of GPT-based chat services, (ChatGPT, Bing, etc.) there is a risk that people will shift towards these search engines. This is also the reason why Google rushed its own GPT model to create BardAI and Google SGE.

  • Why is Advertising on Search Engines so Effective?

Advertising on search engines is so effective because those are people who either want to buy or are interested in a certain product or service. Such users are just looking for a either a little bit more information or just a good deal to buy.

Typically there are four parts of a sales funnel:

    1. Awareness, where a person is made aware of the product or service.
    2. Interest, where the person feels interested but has not yet decided to buy.
    3. Decision, where the person feels that their needs or wants can be satisfied with the product or service.
    4. Action, where finally they decide to buy.

Why Does a Search Engine User Easily Converts

A user searching for information already knows about the product and is interested. Such a user is lot more easier to convert than someone who does not even know about what you are selling.

In my experience, a successful sales is what when a user believes in you, your company and your product. Considering this, a search engine user already knows about the product and the company, which gets 67% of the job already done.

Next, you just need more information and a good deal.

This is where SEO comes in.

SEO helps in creating pages and articles that provide comprehensive information on a topic.

The final part of the sales funnel, i.e., buying, happens through discounts, good after sales service, personalized recommendations, peer reviews, etc.

  • Google November 2023 Reviews Update

Google has released its third reviews update in 2023 on November 08, 2023. As per Google, this will be the last published reviews update since Google will be making regular and ongoing changes to the reviews system.

    What are Reviews Updates?

Review updates control how Google wants user reviews to be.

As per Google, reviews need to be good in four parameters which are:

    • It shows the experience of the reviewer.
    • The author should have expertise over the subject.
    • The website should have an authority over the topic.
    • People should show trust on the webpage.

All of these are together termed as Google’s EEAT guidelines.

  • Google November 2023 Core Update

Google announced its fourth core update on November 2, 2023 on Twitter. This update will be implemented over the next few weeks.

Core updates are the patches that Google uses to strengthen its search engine from being misused or to rectify any inaccuracy.

Do you need to adjust your website?

Google said that website owners who were creating content that is people first, helpful, and reliable, did not need to make any changes in response to these updates.

  • Do .xyz Domains Rank Well on Google? 4 Things to Help You Rank.

Yes, .xyz domains do rank on Google.

A while ago, there was a debate among website owners, SEOs and several other marketing experts regarding whether new age TLDs like .online, .xyz, and other domains do rank on Google.

    Investigation into .xyz Domains

To prove this, I had search on Google about a widely searched term “sgx nifty“. The term represents India’s Stock Exchange NSE’s Nifty Futures, that are listed on the Singapore Exchange, and hence the prefix “sgx“.

The term has a search volume of 450 searches per month as per Ahrefs.

Surprisingly, I saw a XYZ domain in the result. I found that a website with MOZ DA 52, was ranking on Google’s second page despite being a .xyz domain. I have attached the screenshot below.

Please note that this ranking was for a search query from India. Results by Google for other places might vary.

    What Google Search Central Says

A while ago, in 2021, there was a question on whether a .xyz domain would rank.

The answers contained positive answers with most of the users confident of getting a website with this TLD ranked. The answer also contained a wide range of suggestions such as EEAT rules.

    What is Google Search Central?

Google Search Central is a place to get complete information and help about your website’s indexing, related search queries, website performance and several other aspects. It also provides a help forum where you can post your queries and get answers from the community.

Then Why Don’t We See Much .xyz TLDs in Search Results

The reason why not much new age TLDs appear on search results is that they are very new as compared to others.

Secondly, the domain TLD of .xyz only appeared in 2014, which is a lot newer as compared to other domains.

Thirdly, going with the past, many businesses rather prefer to register a .com, .net, .co or even other regional TLDs like .in or .uk domains. This causes less preference for .xyz domains.

Unlike Yandex, which associates domain authorities with TLDs, Google has no such preference. Most essential ranking factor in Google Search is the adherence to EEAT rules.

    What Are EEAT Rules?

    • Experience, personal experience with the topic
    • Expertise, in depth knowledge that provides new insights
    • Authority, how much times you have written around the topic,
    • Trust, do others trust your website

Experience is gained by using the product, service, or item that is searched about. You have to write explicitly to show that you are well experienced.

Expertise is shown by adding information to your written page which was earlier not present on Google or is not widely known. This is the reason why AI content often fails to secure good ranking.

Authority is gained on Google by posting articles several times about that topic which also cover non-core areas. For example, if the core topic you are trying to gain authority is SEO, you would also need to write around benefits of SEO, SEO vs Ads, and SEO vs marketing, etc.

Trust is gained through backlinks that originate from high quality sources such as news websites, sites with high traffic, sites with high domain authority and page authority.

    Conclusion

If you are looking to rank a .xyz website on Google, make sure you fill the website with correct, detailed and well researched information. Adhere to SEO Guidelines and also don’t forget to attract quality backlinks.

In a few months, you will see your website performing better on Google Search.

  • On Aug 31, Google SGE Launched for Users in India and Japan

On Aug 31, Google had released an AI-based generative results into Google search which shows users AI-generated responses to asked queries. Google calls it the Search Generative Experience(SGE), and is meant to provide answers to search queries in a conversational manner.

The Search Generative Experience is an extension of the Google Bard which is a Generative AI-based chatbot. However, this feature is only available to users in India and Japan.

Details About the Search Generative Experience

The Search Generative Experience is a feature by Google Labs which gives AI generated answers to your search queries. It is currently available only in English language and can only be accessed from India and Japan.

Some of the features claimed by Google are:

    1. Easy to learn about something when experience an impulsive need. For example, when you want to cook “chicken biriyani” without having to browse several recipes.
    2. Quick pointers when you are looking for a solution to a specific question.
    3. Summarize the opinion of people about something.
    4. Get straight answers.
    5. Asking follow up questions, easier than doing another round of Google searches.

Benefits That I Have Seen in Google SGE

The greatest benefit is the ability to search the internet and get results about things happening in real-time. This had become a frustration in other LLM models like ChatGPT which does not have the ability to browse the internet.

Further, with Google SGE, I get results with the ability to ask follow up questions and also links that I can use to read further.

Also, SGE is well integrated with a search engine, in this case Google, which helps in seeing other search results when I am not satisfied with the AI generated results.
